Hospital Names Pharmacy in His Honor
November 15, 2006
Rochester entrepreneur and renowned wine connoisseur, Sherwood I. Deutsch has made a gift of $1 million to benefit Strong Memorial Hospital. The hospital thanked Deutsch, a former Strong Memorial pharmacist, by naming its outpatient pharmacy the Sherwood I. Deutsch Pharmacy at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Deutsch, president of Century Liquors & Wines, Inc., graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a pharmacy degree and worked for six years in the pharmacy at Strong before opening Sherwood’s Drugs in Greece at the age of 27.
“I remember how dedicated the pharmacy at Strong was to helping underprivileged families when I worked there as a pharmacist.” said Deutsch. “My hope is that this gift will help the hospital to continue to pursue its missions and goals.”
“Sherwood Deutsch’s generous commitment to Strong Memorial and his work to improve our annual wine auction has been a direct benefit to the patients and families that we serve each and every day,” said Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D., chief executive officer of the Medical Center.
To date, Deutsch has helped to raise over $250,000 for Strong through charitable wine auctions. One such auction, the sixth annual Toast to Your Health Fine Wine Auction, set for Friday, Nov. 17, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, will allow Rochester’s wine lovers to sample more than 200 vintages from throughout the world.
“The people of Rochester have been extremely kind to me and my business throughout the years, and my modest contribution to the hospital is my way of saying thank you to the entire community,” said Deutsch.
