Blackfriars Theatre, Strong Memorial partner for unique event for patients
March 05, 2007
WHAT: A private night of comic relief for local liver transplant patients
WHEN: 8 p.m. Thursday, March 15
WHERE: Blackfriars Theatre, 28 Lawn St., Rochester
Blackfriars Theatre, a mid-size, nonprofit professional theater in Rochester’s East End, and the Strong Memorial Hospital Solid Organ Transplant Team are partnering to provide a night at the theater for those who are waiting for a liver transplant, and those who have recently undergone one.
At 8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, specially invited guests will be on hand at Blackfriars Theatre to see a free, private preview performance of “Epic Proportions.” Set in the 1930s, the storyline tells the story of two brothers, Benny and Phil, who go to the Arizona desert to be extras in the huge Biblical epic. Things move quickly in this comedy and before you know it, Phil is directing the movie and Benny is starring in it.
This night of theater was inspired from an idea by David Spiro, a liver transplant recipient, local actor and director of public relations for Blackfriars Theatre. Spiro knows firsthand the difficulties faced by those who wait for their gift of life, as well as those recuperating from an organ transplant. He has found that laughter is indeed the best medicine, and used it copiously as a way to deal with his transplant experience.
Belief in the old adage that laughter is the best medicine, it is hoped that this event will provide to some special members of the Rochester community a night to forget their everyday troubles and immerse themselves in the comic misfortunes of imaginary characters. This collaboration is part of Strong’s overall commitment of care to its patients, as well as Blackfriars Theatre’s commitment to the Rochester community.
Editor’s Note: Although the performance is closed to the general public, media crews are welcome to attend and speak with David Spiro, other transplant patients attending the performance, and/or a member of the Solid Organ Transplant Team.
