Cheerleading Clinic Features Reality TV Stars, Helps Hospital
June 08, 2007
Expert round table discussions for coaches will explore topics ranging from weight training to building a program from scratch.
Area cheerleaders and their coaches won’t want to miss Memories for Megan, a coaches’ showcase and cheerleading clinic featuring coach Donna Martin and her daughter Ryan, both of Cheerleader Nation, one of Fox’s newest reality television series. The drama, which debuted on Lifetime TV in March last year, tracked real-life teen cheerleaders – and their mothers – from Dunbar High School in Lexington, Ky., as they lived through “blood, sweat and cheers” to win their fourth national championship.
Memories for Megan is a senior project developed by Brittni Battaglia, a student at Webster Thomas High School who has always wanted to “do something special” for family friend Megan Markus, a Fairport High School cheerleader whose life changed forever after she was injured in a car accident in 1997. The clinic, which benefits Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong in Markus’ honor, will be held 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (registration begins at 7:30 a.m.) Saturday, July 7, at The Aquinas Institute, 1127 Dewey Ave., Rochester.
“I want to use my love of cheerleading as part of my senior project,” said Battaglia, who is still a junior and knew she would have to work in advance to have the Martins as guest speakers. “Megan can’t cheer today, but I hope this helps to connect her back into the cheerleading world she loves.”
The coaches’ showcase and clinic costs $75 per coach and includes lunch, inspirational talks by Donna Martin and afternoon roundtable sessions with area experts (topics range from weight training to building a program from scratch). From to , a team showcase and Ryan Martin’s special inspirational talk for cheerleaders is open to student athletes for a minimum donation of $20 (please note: this is the only segment of the clinic open to students).
Memories for Megan is open to all Varsity, JV, freshman and youth cheerleaders, coaches and staff. Space is limited. To register or learn more, call (585) 254-2020 ext. 2151 or visit www.leaguelineup.com/cheerleadingshowcase.
