School of Medicine and Dentistry Fills New Position: Core Facilities Director

Sally Quataert, Ph.D., has been appointed to a newly created position: director of Core Facilities for the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. The facilities provide state-of-the art drug discovery, imaging and genetic technologies and techniques to researchers across the University and the University of Rochester Medical Center.

As director, Quataert will be responsible for the business, financial, logistical, regulatory and personnel management of all core research facilities as of Sept. 1, 2007. She will also be charged with setting performance standards for each facility, in consultation with core directors and user groups. In addition, she will work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Basic Research to provide scientific and strategic guidance on the initiation or phasing-out of core facilities, new equipment priorities, staffing and emerging technologies.

Current URSMD Core Facilities include the following: Bio Safety Level 3 (BSL-3), Biomolecular Interaction, Electron Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Functional Genomics, Gene Targeting and Transgenics, Proteomics, Static Confocal Imaging (Pathology/Morphology Imaging Core), Vivarium and Xenogen/IVIS. Additional core facilities are planned in conjunction with the strategic plan.

Quataert is a recognized leader in bioanalytical method development for vaccines. She successfully led a laboratory that over ten years provided key clinical data to ensure the timely licensure of five new vaccines. Since July 2004, Quataert has served as director of the Human Immunology Center Core Laboratory within the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. There she established a university core laboratory that provides cutting edge technology in the field of immunological research and new measures of success in clinical trials.  

Prior to 2004 she was director of Applied Immunology and Microbiology Infrastructure at Wyeth Vaccines Research in Rochester for seven years. There she provided strategic scientific planning and analysis to identify, develop and apply immunological tests to judge the efficacy of new vaccines.

Quataert earned her Ph.D. at the State University of New York, Buffalo, N.Y., in 1983. She is a registered Quality Assurance professional in Good Laboratory Practices with the Society for Quality Assurance. She is also a member of the American Association of Immunology, the American Association of Microbiology and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.
