Free Carousel Ride Offered to Encourage Kids’ Flu Shots
December 11, 2007
Kids can take a step toward staying healthy this season while earning a free carousel ride at a flu immunization clinic hosted Dec. 14 and 15 at Strong National Museum of Play by Health Checkpoint of the University of Rochester School of Nursing.
Health Checkpoint will offer flu shots for children ages 6 months and up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the museum, located at One Manhattan Square in Rochester. The museum will provide a free ride on its carousel for every child that receives a flu vaccine during this special flu-shot clinic.
“Since 2002, the Centers for Disease Control has recommended flu shots for kids ages 6 months and up, and maintains that the flu shot is the best way to avoid getting the flu and giving it to others,” said Bill Russell, M.S., R.N., director of immunization services at Health Checkpoint. “We hope this special offering and the incentive provided by the Strong National Museum of Play will encourage families to protect their children this season by getting them a flu shot.”
Health Checkpoint also announced it will hold its final flu shot clinics of the season at the following times and locations:
- Saturday, Dec. 15, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Brighton Fire Department, 3100 East Ave.
- Monday, Dec. 17, 8:15 to 11 a.m., Victor Village Hall, 60 East Main St., Victor
- Tuesday, Dec. 18, 4 to 6 p.m., Laurelton Fire Department, 405 Empire Blvd.
- Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2 to 5 p.m., Chili Fire Department, 3231 Chili Ave.
It only takes seven to 10 days after a flu shot is given for it to become effective, so there still is time for the flu shot to be the best defense against acquiring the flu this season. Complications from the flu result in more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths each year.
Medicare and most Excellus and Preferred Care managed-care products cover the cost of receiving a flu shot; insurance ID cards are necessary for proof of insurance. Otherwise, there is a $30 fee for the vaccine. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
