Head of Medical Center Libraries Will Lead National Organization

Julia Sollenberger, director of Health Sciences Libraries and Technologies at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will serve as the next president of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL).

The AAHSL is composed of the libraries serving the accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada that belong to or are affiliated with the Association of American Medical Colleges. The association has more than 140 members.

Sollenberger, currently the association’s president-elect, will begin her one-year term as president in November, 2008.

As director, Sollenberger oversees the Edward G. Miner Library at the Medical Center, the Basil G. Bibby Library at the Eastman Dental Center and the John R. Williams Health Sciences Library at Highland Hospital. She also is associate professor in the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine.

“My goal as president of the AAHSL will be to facilitate partnerships and collaborative projects at a national level that advance the critical role of information and knowledge management in the academic missions of education, research, patient care and community engagement,” Sollenberger said.

A Fellow of the Medical Library Association and a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, Sollenberger has been director of the Medical Center libraries for nine years. She has worked at the University for 27 years.

The AAHSL seeks to improve the role of academic health sciences librarians and information professionals in the United States and Canada by assessing and strengthening the role of health sciences libraries in patient care, research and teaching.
