September 03, 2008
People with oral, head and neck cancers can get an update on surgical approaches to care during a discussion at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Shawn D. Newlands, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., chair of Otolaryngology at the Medical Center, will lead the discussion and answer questions during the meeting of the Oral, Head and Neck Connection support group. The meeting will be in the Luellen Patient and Family Resource Center.
Head and neck cancers account for approximately 3 to 5 percent of all cancers in the country, affecting about 40,000 people each year. These cancers are more common in men and in people over age 50.
