New Speaker Scheduled for Saward-Berg Lecture
April 14, 2009
Margaret Kruk, M.D.
Despite the cancellation of Obama-appointee David Blumenthal, M.D., the annual Saward-Berg lecture will go forward with a new speaker and a new time.
The rescheduled lecture is from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the Class of ’62 Auditorium, room G-9425. The speaker will be Margaret Kruk, M.D., of the University of Michigan, delivering a lecture titled “Global is Local: New Challenges in Global Public Health.” It is a free talk, with no advance registration required.
Kruk is an assistant professor in Health Management and Policy at the UM School of Public Health. She also consults for the Averting Maternal Death and Disability Project at Columbia University and the United Nations.
Previously, she was a policy advisor for the Health at the Millennium project, an advisory body to the U.N. Secretary-General. She worked with expert task forces on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, access to essential medicines, and maternal and child health.
She earned her M.D. from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, and an M.P.H. from Harvard University. She has practiced family medicine in remote northern Ontario, Canada; her research focus is on quantitative analysis of patient and provider preferences and health systems performance in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
The Saward-Berg lecture is named for Ernest Saward, M.D., and Robert L. Berg, M.D. A 1939 graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Saward was medical director of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program from 1945 to 1970, and a former faculty member. Berg was the founding chair of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine who taught and mentored medical students for almost 50 years. Doctoral and post-graduate students in the URMC Department of Community and Preventive Medicine selected this year’s Saward-Berg lecturer.
