ACL Injury Prevention Training Held for Section V Coaches
June 10, 2009

Training programs are being offered to Section V high school coaches to help launch what is believed to be the nation’s first and only community injury prevention program for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears among female athletes this fall. Called PEP (Prevent injury, Enhance Performance), the program was created by University Sports Medicine and trialed in Monroe County high schools for the past two years. Preliminary results have shown a 72% reduction in the incidence of non-contact ACL injuries.
Beginning June 22, up to one dozen 90-minute training sessions will be held throughout the Finger Lakes region. Junior Varsity and Varsity coaches of the three main sports with high incidences of ACL tears. (soccer, volleyball and basketball) are invited to attend; school districts are assigned specific dates and times (see below).
In the training sessions, coaches will be introduced to the science behind the program, and taught the specific exercises proven to reduce female athletes’ risk of sustaining a non-contact ACL knee injury. Each session will last one and a half hours, and only one junior varsity and varsity coach for each sport will be allowed to attend.
Background information on the PEP program can be found at www.urmcsportsmed.com (click Special Programs & Injury Prevention. Coaches must reserve their spot by calling or emailing the contact person noted below.
In February, University Sports Medicine announced it would expand its PEP program to create the nation’s first – and only – community prevention approach to decrease non-contact ACL tears among female high school athletes. About 120 Section V high schools in Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Livingston, Allegany, Steuben and Wayne counties are eligible to join the program by sending coaches to these training sessions. The expansion, made possible by a $161,000 grant from theGreater Rochester Health Foundation (GRHF), will cover both junior varsity and varsity female athletes in the three high-incidence sport beginning this fall. USM officials expect to train about 11,180 athletes on nearly 700 teams during the two-year program.
