Paul C. Levy, M.D., has been appointed as acting chairman of the Department of Medicine, effective immediately.  He will serve in this capacity during Dr. Mark Taubman’s term as acting CEO of URMC.

For the past six years, Dr. Levy has served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He has played an important role overseeing clinical programs in the Department, as well as developing and implementing cost savings initiatives. In the past year, he assisted in raising faculty awareness about the hidden hazards of blood transfusions and helped launch cost reduction efforts targeting blood utilization, reference lab testing and imaging studies. He has also championed efforts to improve quality of care and improve patient satisfaction. Dr. Levy will continue in his role as the Medical Director of our Compliance program, where he leads efforts to improve regulatory compliance of our faculty and hospital system.

Dr. Levy obtained his M.D. degree from The Ohio State University. He completed an internal medicine residency at Strong Memorial Hospital where he also served as Chief Resident. He completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Rochester.  Dr. Levy is a past president of the New York State Thoracic Society.  He joined the faculty of the University of Rochester in 1989 and was the inaugural recipient of the Ralph W. Prince endowed Professorship in Medicine in 2004.

Dr. Patricia Sime, M.D., F.R.C.P., Associate Chairman of Medicine for Research, will work closely with Dr. Levy, senior leadership, and Division chiefs to coordinate research recruitment for the Department and to develop inter-divisional and inter-departmental programs in conjunction with URMC’s Strategic Plan. Dr. Sime is an Associate Professor of Medicine and joined the University of Rochester faculty in 1999.  She is a highly productive physician-scientist and runs a vibrant translational lung disease program focusing on mechanisms and therapeutic interventions in lung inflammation and fibrosis. In April of this year, she was elected to membership of the American Society for Clinical Investigation in recognition of her outstanding research contributions.

Dr. Levy and Dr. Sime will be working closely with department CFO Tim Heffer, Associate Chair for Education Donald Bordley, M.D., and David Bushinsky, M.D., Associate Chair for Academic Affairs.  Please join us in thanking Dr. Levy and Dr. Sime as they take on their expanded roles in the Department of Medicine.
