ACOG Award Acknowledges Commitment to Patient Safety

James R. Woods Jr., M.D., received the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Award for Outstanding District Service for District II on May 19 at ACOG’s Annual Clinical Meeting in San Francisco.
Woods, the Henry A. Thiede Professor and chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, earned the award in recognition of his “tireless efforts in the area of obstetric patient safety.” He is a leader in using multi-media resources and simulation technology to improve communication among care providers to benefit patient safety.
An advocate for effective communication among physicians and patients, Woods has pioneered strategies to transform challenging interactions with patients following adverse outcomes into extraordinary opportunities for compassionate communication. He is co-author of What Do I Say? Communicating Intended or Unanticipated Outcomes in Obstetrics, and has lectured extensively on the topic.
Woods is founder and senior editor of Peri-FACTS, an online multimedia journal on critical issues in obstetrics, read by 13,000 subscribers around the world.
