Camp Will Focus on Performance Enhancement for Teen Athletes

University Sports Medicine specialists to teach strength/conditioning skills

May 26, 2010

High school and college athletes will have the opportunity to learn strength and conditioning skills at a month-long Performance Enhancement Co-Ed Camp sponsored by University Sports Medicine (USM), a program of University of Rochester Medical School 's Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

The camp will take place from June 28 to July 29 at the sports fields of the University of Rochester. Participants can sign up for the morning session, which will run 8 to 10 a.m., or the evening session, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

“We developed this camp based on our experience in working with high school and college athletes, both men and women,” said Todd Peterson, A.T.C., P.T.A., director of performance enhancement at University Sports Medicine, “The competition they face, no matter what sport, is fierce and we’ve found these young athletes are requiring more than sport-specific skills training to succeed.”

The goal of the Performance Enhancement Camp is to reduce their risk of injury and improve their competitive edge in the sports they play. The drills are constructed to help participants improve their running form, agility and foot speed; increase flexibility, balance, coordination and joint awareness; enhance core strength and muscle control; and learn body alignment and proper technique to avoid being injured.

USM’s team of strength and conditioning specialists, exercise physiologists and athletic trainers designed the content of the program to help increase athlete’s power, speed, and flexibility and reduce injuries. “We teach sound fundamental exercises and focus a great deal on proper technique.”

The cost to enroll is $150 per person. (Group discounts are available). For more information or to register, call University Sports Medicine at (585) 341-9150, or visit www.sportsmed.urmc.edu and click on special events.
