July 23, 2010
Cancer survivors and their families can join a victory celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Seneca Park Zoo. This second annual event is hosted by the Community Cancer Collaborative which includes the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and other area cancer care and support services providers.
Throughout the evening, there will be music, children’s activities, food and of course, the animals. The event is free, however tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Wilmot Cancer Center information desk, (585) 276-4481.
“There have been so many advances in technology and therapies that surviving cancer is becoming more common and for every person who has been touched by the disease, it is reason to celebrate,” says Beverly Brooks, co-leader of the collaborative and executive director of Gilda’s Club. There are more than 10 million cancer survivors in the United States.
“It is a wonderful way to recognize the journeys that people with cancer have taken and rejoice in their successes,” says Ann Savastano, co-leader of the collaborative and director of patient services for the American Cancer Society.
The Community Cancer Collaborative includes American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Genesee Valley Oncology Nursing Society, Gilda’s Club, Highland Hospital, Interlakes Oncology and Hematology, Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General Hospital, Pluta Cancer Center, Unity Hospital, University of Rochester Medical Center and James P. Wilmot Cancer Center.
