City, URMC to Hold Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market

Second Annual Fair Launches Rochester Women’s Health Week

September 02, 2010

The City of Rochester and the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) will sponsor the second annual Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Rochester Public Market, 280 N. Union St.

The fair kicks off Rochester Women’s Health Week, Sept. 11 to 18, to be proclaimed by Mayor Robert J. Duffy.

The event offers a variety of free health screenings to adult women, including tests for asthma, AIDS/HIV, osteoporosis, breast cancer, heart disease, stroke risk, dental problems, diabetes, glaucoma, kidney disease, lead poisoning, mental health issues and skin cancer. Information booths will be available to Ask the MD, Ask the Ob/Gyn, Ask the Nutritionist, and Ask the Pharmacist. Help for smoking cessation and also for insurance enrollment will be offered for those in need. Physicians and mid-level care providers will be on site throughout the event for screenings and to answer questions.

“Providing women most in need with access to health care isn’t just an important goal, but it is essential to the success of our community,” Mayor Duffy said. “The Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market is a prime example of how Rochester can bring outstanding care to the community.”

Rochester Women’s Health Week evolved from a desire to present a series of health seminars for the region’s professionals and to address clinical issues and the effects that environmental factors have on women’s health, in conjunction with WXXI’s popular Speaking of Women’s Health program, according to James R. Woods Jr., M.D., chair of URMC’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“Promoting women’s health requires personal responsibility but also community action. The Women’s Health Screening Fair at the Market confirms this commitment. Results from our first fair in 2009 revealed numerous participants with serious health risk factors. Once again we are urging women to ‘spend an hour with us, and we will give you back a lifetime of health,’” Woods said.

The Women’s Health Screening Fair is co-sponsored by Wegmans, MVP Health Care, Excellus, M&T Bank, Jim Boyle of Brighton Securities, Presentation Source, Medved, Verizon Wireless, and the Rochester Academy of Medicine.
