‘Pain Chronicles’ Author Melanie Thernstrom to Speak at Medical Center April 9

Best-selling author Melanie Thernstrom, who wrote “The Pain Chronicles,” will deliver the keynote address at an educational seminar for physicians at noon Saturday, April 9, at the University of Rochester Medical Center Flaum Atrium The free lecture is open to the public with advanced registration.

Thernstrom shared her personal journey through shoulder and neck pain in the book, which is considered an interesting combination of science, investigative journalism, history and memoir. Since its release last summer, the book has become a “must-read” for anyone who struggles with chronic pain.

Her perspective highlights the day-long program on Advances in Pain Management, led by John Markman, M.D., associate professor and director of Neuromedicine Pain Management Center and Translational Pain Research Program.  The seminar brings experts from throughout the northeast to address a variety of topics including pain and behavior, coordinating care for patients with cancer pain, fibromyalgia and neuralgia. Among the speakers are Jeffrey Mogil, Ph.D., of McGill University, Ajay Wasan, M.D., of Harvard Medical School, and Donna Thomas, M.D., of SUNY Upstate Medical Center. They join URMC’s Robert Dworkin, Ph.D., director of Anesthesiology Clinical Research Center, and Babak Jahromi, M.D., Ph.D., neurosurgeon.

Markman is chair of the Pain and Palliative Care Section of the American Academy of Neurology, a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Pain, and an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also serves as a special government employee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a member of the Anesthetic and Life Support Drug Advisory Committee.
