Rides for Life Gets a Fresh Look with New Place, New Date, New Vibes

Event Lines Up with 100 Deadliest Days for Teen Driving

May 06, 2011

This year’s Rides for Life car show has a fresh look with a new summer date and a new location in Webster. Families and car enthusiasts who attend will enjoy music, food, drinks and entertainment. The event will take place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at the Damascus Shrine Center at 979 Bay Road in Webster. Radio station Legends 102.7 FM will emcee this year’s car show, which is presented by the Kessler Trauma Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC).

Anyone is welcome to participate in Rides for Life’s main event, the car and motorcycle show, for a requested donation of $10. Prizes will be awarded in categories, ranging from muscle cars to sports compacts to motorcycles. A dollar donation is requested to participate in the voting process.

“We’re excited about mixing it up this year,” said Julius Cheng, M.D., associate professor of Acute Care Surgery and organizer of the Rides for Life event. “We hope the event will remind all drivers that every death that comes from a motor vehicle crash is a preventable one. By taking necessary precautions, like wearing seatbelts and driving without distractions, drivers are saving lives.”

This year’s event comes at a particularly important time of year, since the “100 deadliest days” of teen driving – the time of year when teens are most likely to be involved in deadly crashes – begins on Memorial Day. Funds raised from the event benefit the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester, based out of Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The event is made possible by a grant from the Allstate Foundation, aimed at promoting smart teen driving and reducing the incidence of vehicle-related deaths and injuries. For more information the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Rochester, visit http://bit.ly/IFCKRochester.
