Ranking Reflects Growth of Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong

July 25, 2003

The U.S.News & World Report’s 2003 Best Hospitals issue that is hitting newsstands this week includes pediatrics programs at Strong, as well as hormone specialties and geriatrics, as among the best in the nation. Pediatrics ranked as the 27th best in the nation, according to the U.S.News list.

For the first time since the magazine began the rankings fourteen years ago, pediatric programs at Strong have made the prestigious list, which this year includes 28 of the top pediatrics programs in the nation. Children’s Hospital of New York - Presbyterian and New York University Medical Center are the only other New York hospitals to be included in the list; Strong is the only pediatrics program to rank among Upstate hospitals.

Elizabeth McAnarney, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at Golisano Children's Hospital, and chair of the University of Rochester's Department of Pediatrics, says the national accolade is the result of continuous improvement on a number of fronts.

"During the past decade, we have built upon our already-substantive services in a variety of ways, such as recruiting more medical and surgical subspecialists, and enhancing our facilities," McAnarney says. "This summer, we will begin construction on a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, proof positive that we are making great strides in our quest to be one of the nation's premier children's hospitals."

In addition to the soon-to-be-constructed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Golisano Children's Hospital is in the planning stages to create a new Pediatric Surgical Suite for children and their families. Two years ago, the hospital opened a new pediatric emergency department, which serves children exclusively.

Strong Memorial’s geriatrics program ranked as the 42nd best, while its hormonal disorders specialties captured a position as 32nd best.
