Bill Sweet Memorial Walk/Run Set for Sept. 20
Fund-raiser benefits Strong Memorial Hospital's Organ Transplant Program
August 21, 2003
Registrations are being accepted from individuals and teams for the third annual Bill Sweet Memorial Walk/Run, which will be held Sept. 20 at the Genesee Valley Park Roundhouse Pavilion. Pledges collected by participants benefit the Organ Transplant Program at Strong Memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Sweet was a longtime Friends of Strong volunteer at Strong Memorial. He also was the first Rochester-area resident to receive a heart transplant. More than 20 years ago, he and his wife traveled to California for the surgery because it was not widely available. Subsequently, he had a second heart transplant, survived a bout with cancer and underwent triple-bypass surgery. He was the first person in the world to have bypass surgery of a second transplanted heart, a procedure that was performed by George L. Hicks Jr., M.D., at Strong Memorial.
Registration for the 3-mile Bill Sweet Memorial Walk/Run is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 20. The event begins at 11 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in numerous categories. A cook-out and entertainment provided by the Dishdoggies party band will begin about noon, with Strong Memorial transplant patients and their families joining walk/run participants.
Register by calling Friends of Strong Administrator of Public Awareness Joanie Clancy at (585) 275-2420.
