URMC Appoints Chief HR Officer

July 10, 2012

Jeffrey Stevens

After a national search, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has appointed Jeffrey Stevens as its chief human resources officer. Stevens most recently served as vice president of Human Resources (HR) for the University of Massachusetts Memorial Healthcare in Worcester, Mass., a five-hospital system anchored by an 800-bed academic medical center.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Stevens holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from Clark University and a master’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University and Baruch College of the City of New York. He has more than 20 years of experience working for organizations like the National Labor Relations Board as well as social service and complex health care organizations.

Among Stevens’ accomplishments has been his work in developing the Human Resources Business Partner Model, which served to integrate the role of human resources into the operations, finances and strategy of Medical Center departments. He has led labor planning and contract negotiations with UMass Memorial Healthcare’s 21 collective bargaining units, and spearheaded the system-wide implementation of new HR information and payroll systems.

Stevens will report to the University’s associate vice president for Human Resources Chuck Murphy, and to URMC CEO Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D.  He will directly supervise the manager of the Medical Center HR Office with a dotted-line relationship with the HR Directors of Medical Center Affiliates (Highland Hospital, The Highlands at Pittsford, The Highlands at Brighton and Visiting Nurse Service).

“Jeff is skilled at managing organizational resources in areas of staffing and scheduling, organizational development, employee engagement and patient-centered care,” Murphy said. “He’s a terrific addition to the University’s Human Resources team.”

“As health care evolves, Jeff will bring the experience and fresh ideas we need to remain a preferred employer,” Berk said. “During the search process, Jeff really stood out for his ability to gain employees’ and managers’ trust and enthusiasm.”

Among Stevens’ more visible contributions at UMass have been his photographic exhibits of staff, The Faces of Caring, and his organization of live music performances throughout UMass, Caring Talents.
