Sept. 6 Junior Builders’ Golf Tournament Benefits Mary Parkes Asthma Center

August 01, 2012

The Rochester Junior Builders’ Exchange hosts its 17th annual golf tournament to benefit the expansion of the Mary Parkes Center for Asthma, Allergy and Pulmonary Care on Thursday, Sept. 6, at Victor Hills Golf Club.

The scramble begins with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m., and includes breakfast, lunch and a steak dinner.  There will be a variety of raffles and prizes, including a trip to St. Thomas with $1,000 towards airfare, a diamond pendant valued at $2,600, an Apple iPad, and tickets to a New York Yankees game.

This tournament is one of the largest in the area with more than 300 golfers. This year’s proceeds will fund expansion of the center, which is part of the University of Rochester Medical Center.

“It’s heartwarming to see the tremendous support for the Mary Parkes Asthma Center, which is an important resource in our community,” said Rob Unger, chair of the Junior Builders’ Exchange (JBX) board of directors.

The center is undergoing a major expansion and renovation to provide additional space to serve more patients and their families with asthma, allergies and other lung diseases.

The Mary Parkes Center for Asthma, Allergy and Pulmonary Care, is named for a young woman who died April 2, 1991, during a severe asthma episode. Walter and Carmina Parkes and their children Susan, Tom and Linda, were driven to open the first asthma center in the region, which provides outstanding patient care, cutting-edge technology and novel research.

The Junior Builders’ Exchange chose to support the center after learning about her story and the commitment of the family that helped create the center. Working closely with the Parkes family, the JBX has seen the tournament grow from raising $4,000 in its first year to more than $140,000 last year.

“This is clearly one of the largest tournaments in the area. We sell out two golf courses quickly and are always happy to see such support and commitment from the builders in our area,” Unger said.
