Child Life Specialists Honored by Friends of Strong
October 01, 2003
Jennifer Schaefer and Christie Rinaudo, child life specialists at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong, will be honored Oct. 9 with the Volunteer Supervisor Award at the Friends of Strong Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner.
The award is presented annually to a person who has supervised volunteers for at least two years and who is selected for his/her exceptional skills in training, recognizing and including volunteers as members of the team.
As child life specialists, Schaefer and Rinaudo provide emotional and developmental support to pediatric patients. They co-supervise about 50 inpatient volunteers and 35 junior volunteers at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong. They orient, schedule and train all volunteers on the inpatient unit, as well as those in the video lending library. They also get to know each volunteer personally.
Schaefer and Rinaudo appreciate the services provided by the volunteers and this is evident in their interactions with them, says Louise Criticos, Friends of Strong director. “They keep the volunteers well informed about the patients and their families and make an effort to match volunteers with patients, based on their interests.”
Schaefer has been with Golisano Children’s Hospital since 1999. Rinaudo was an assistant at Golisano Children’s Hospital from February 1997 to May 1998. She returned in June 2000 to assume the role of child life specialist. Rinaudo is currently working on her Master’s in Human Development at the University of Rochester.
