Miracle Weekend Gets a Groovy Start with the Stroll for Strong Kids
May 28, 2014
Genesee Valley Park will be a sea of vibrant colors when UR Medicine’s Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Miracle Weekend kicks off with the 18th annual Stroll for Strong Kids Walk and 5K Run at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 31. Inspired by the event’s “Peace, Love and Healing” theme, hundreds of teams will join together to make one large tie-dye spectacle, all in support of the brave kids, and families, who have stepped through the Finger Lakes Regions’ only children’s hospital’s doors.
Last year’s Stroll was a record-breaking success, drawing almost 5,500 participants and raising $415,000. On-site registration for this year’s 5K race starts at 7 a.m., followed by the run at 8:30 a.m. Those participating in the walk can register on-site starting at 8 a.m., with the walk at 10:30 a.m.
After working up an appetite, participants can munch on kettle corn from KP’s Kettle Corn & Concession, a new vendor at Stroll this year, and enjoy lunch from long-time event sponsors Zweigle’s and Subway. Dessert will be provided by Abbott’s Frozen Custard, presenting sponsor of the Stroll for the last three consecutive years. The day will continue with family-friendly activities, including bounce houses, carnival games, face painting, video games from Gamin’ Ride, live music, makeovers from Glamour Ride, and more, until 1 p.m.
“The Stroll is all about the stories,” said Stephanie Sheets, associate director of community affairs at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “The passion and dedication people put into the event, whether they are participating individually or creating a team, and the overall recruitment of participants and fundraising, truly demonstrates how much the hospital and its staff mean to so many.”
After the Stroll launches the special weekend of remembrance and celebration, hospital supporters can take time to relax and tune in to the 31st annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) Telethon, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6:30 to 11 p.m. on News10NBC. Viewers will hear heart-wrenching stories from this year’s five Miracle Kids, their families and their physicians. Various CMNH sponsors will also be recognized for fundraisers they’ve held over the past year. To donate to the children’s hospital during the Telethon, please call (585)241-KIDS(5437).
“Although miracles are celebrated throughout the year at Golisano Children’s Hospital, May is a special time when all Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s recognize the wonders made possible by medical professionals, patient families, and children’s hospital advocates in their respective communities,” said Betsy Findlay, director of special events and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “That’s what Rochester’s Miracle Weekend is all about.”
