Record Attendance Highlights Golisano Children’s Hospital Gala
November 17, 2003
Nearly 750 people attended the Golisano Children’s Hospital Gala in October, gathering in record numbers to help ill and injured children from throughout the region. The event grossed more than $430,000, and the proceeds stay here in Rochester.
Howard Jacobson, a member of the children’s hospital board of directors, served as chair of the Gala, which was held Saturday, Oct. 25, at USAirports Air Charters Aircraft Hangar at the Greater Rochester International Airport. “We are so fortunate that our community knows how important it is to have Strong kids for future generations,” he says.
B. Thomas Golisano, the hospital’s namesake and good friend, served as honorary chair of the Gala. He addressed the audience, encouraging the community to continue its financial, spiritual, and moral support of the children’s hospital. He also read a letter that was sent to him by parents whose son was cared for in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Golisano says he receives such a letter from thankful families on a weekly basis.
Many sponsors helped make this year’s Gala such a resounding success, including the Elias Family Foundation, Anthony J. Costello & Son/USAirports Air Charters, ESL Federal Credit Union, the Wanda Polisseni family, and Douglas J. Summers. Those in attendance also enjoyed a performance by members of Garth Fagan Dance, who made a special appearance at the event. John and Vanessa Sartini, of Penfield, were honored at the Gala. Their son, Jacob, underwent successful craniofacial surgery here this year.
Among the many outstanding items up for bid during the Gala were a party at Tasting’s restaurant for 100 people, a shopping spree at Mann’s Jewelers, an all-access trip to an Oakland Raiders game, and owner’s-box seats to a Buffalo Sabres’ game. The evening’s bidding, led by Jacobson, was spirited but friendly.
Golisano Children’s Hospital is the region’s only hospital devoted solely to the care of children. It recently began construction of a new 22-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, to open next year, and announced plans for a new Pediatric Surgical Suite.
