Strong Memorial's Response to New York State Review of Liver Transplant Program

April 23, 2004

Strong Memorial Hospital has been working closely with the New York State Department of Health since October to address procedural concerns in its liver transplant program.

Some improvements have already been made and others are under way to correct issues pointed out by the Department of Health, such as improving quality assurance processes and creating more detailed patient consent procedures. Strong also will participate on a state-wide task force that will develop consistent guidelines for evolving aspects of liver transplant.

Two years ago, Strong named internationally respected transplant surgeon, Adel Bozorgzadeh, M.D., to lead its program. Under Bozorgzadeh’s leadership, the program’s quality assurance processes have improved significantly. “We welcome the recommendations made by the State and are eager to incorporate them into our processes to further strengthen our program,” said C. McCollister Evarts, M.D., CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health.

Within the next 10 days, Strong will submit a Plan of Correction to the Department of Health that will address the concerns raised.

“At no time during this review has the State questioned the overall quality outcomes of our program,” Evarts said.  “In fact, Strong’s liver transplant program has consistently compiled some of the best results in the country according to standard measures used to compare the performance of liver transplant programs.”  The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients tracks comparative results of liver transplant programs in the U.S.  To view Strong Memorial’s results, visit http://www.ustransplant.org

“Strong Memorial deeply regrets the added concern that this matter may cause our patients and their families,” he said.  “We want to assure you that our program is solid, delivering high quality care, and we are going to be here for years to come.”
