Jack G. Caton to be recognized as a national leader by the American Academy of Periodontology

Department of Dentistry professor and alumnus to receive AAP’s top award

The American Academy of Periodontology Gold Medal Award will be presented to Jack G. Caton, DDS, MS, in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of periodontal research, education and service. Caton will receive the award during the 90th Annual Academy Meeting held this November in Florida

Caton will also be honored with the Academy’s Special Citation for co-chairing the 2003 Evidence-Based Workshop on Contemporary Science in Clinical Periodontics. His earlier honors include the William J. Gies Award in 1993 and an AAP Fellowship in 1995. He is a past president of the AAP and past chair of the American Board of Periodontology.

Caton received his dental degree from the University of California Dental School and his periodontal specialty certificate from Eastman Dental Center in 1973. He also earned his M.S. degree from the University of Rochester in 1973. He has been on the Eastman faculty since 1973 and has served as division chair and program director since 1990. He and his graduate students have conducted research in periodontal wound healing, animal models, diagnosis, and human clinical trials.  He has authored more than 80 publications; given more than 190 major presentations worldwide; and served as principal investigator on many research grants.

Upon hearing of the award, Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz, professor and chair of the Department of Dentistry and director of Eastman Dental Center said, “I am extremely pleased that the Academy has bestowed its highest honor on Jack Caton.  He has given 100 percent to his role as educator and researcher over the past 31 years at Eastman.  He is respected by residents and faculty and maintains a consistently high level of professionalism within our Periodontics Program as well as in the AAP and all his national affiliations.”

Caton currently serves as associate editor of the Journal of Periodontology; commissioner on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA); chair of the Periodontics Advisory Committee of CODA; and director of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Board.
