Highland Hospital Opens Evarts Joint Center
The new center is named in honor of McCollister Evarts, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center and a pioneer in modern orthopaedic surgery.

Rochester, New York, March 30, 2005 –Highland Hospital recently dedicated the most comprehensive Orthopaedic care center in the Rochester Region. The Evarts Joint Center will bring together some of the leading orthopaedic surgeons in the community.
The Evarts Joint Center consists of a 20 bed dedicated inpatient unit beautifully designed for the comfort and care of orthopaedic patients. Physical therapy will be located on the unit to make it more convenient for patients.
In addition, two state-of-the-art operating rooms have opened with specialized orthopaedic equipment. In the future, the Evarts Joint Center will also have an outpatient clinic, easily accessible to patients. The outpatient clinic will provide osteoporosis counseling, a fracture prevention program, education and screening.
Dr. McCollister (Mac) Evarts is Chief Executive Officer at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health, vice president and vice provost for health affairs at the University of Rochester. He is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Evarts was one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform joint replacement surgery and the first to perform the surgery on a patient in Rochester.
Since 1999, Highland Hospital has doubled in size and its emergency department has grown over 60%. The hospital has the largest Bariatric surgery program and birthing center in the region. In addition, orthopaedics, geriatrics and women’s services continue grow.
For more than 115 years, Highland Hospital has provided innovative, high quality patient care for the Rochester community. Today, Highland is a 261-licensed acute care bed facility.
