Fund-raiser aims to improve care for children

October 25, 2005

Iron Butterfly Health Club in Victor is supplying child-sized bikes and other equipment for the event.

On Nov. 5, cyclers and stationary cyclers from across the region won’t just be getting together at the Gordon Field House at RIT for some exercise. They’ll be raising money for the region’s only children’s hospital, packing the field house with 200 stationary bicycles.

After a successful spinning fund-raiser last year, Andy Nye, a personal fitness consultant at the Penfield Racquet & Fitness Club, and fitness pal Craig Hurlbut, decided they wanted to expand the event to fill the field house. The pair chose Golisano Children’s Hospital and Camp Good Days and Special Times as the beneficiaries.

Victor health club Iron Butterfly got wind of the event and volunteered to provide child-sized equipment for the event’s Kids’ Zone. The health club, which opened early this year, is the only health club in the Rochester area to have space and equipment dedicated to children.

Dylan Chase, owner, said he wanted to contribute to the fund-raiser’s success for several reasons. Chase said he also wants to encourage families to exercise together, and that exercise at the health club is a great alternative for kids who don’t like organized sports. The event would encourage both.

“We believe in giving back,” Chase said. “Our children are healthy. Sometimes it’s easy to turn away when you haven’t needed something like Golisano Children’s Hospital.”

Iron Butterfly will supply three trainers for the entire event, and children can form teams, just like adults. Kids will have the chance to try out several pieces of traditional circuit training, including mini spinning bikes, bosu balls and weights. They’ll also be able to play “dodge bowling” and “exercise dice” during Kids’ Zone activities from noon to 4 p.m.
