Basketball Tournament to Benefit Medical School Scholarships

November 02, 2005

Can any University of Rochester Medical Center faculty member dunk?

That question could be answered at the Great Scholarship Shootout on Sunday, Nov. 13, in the Palestra at the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center on the University of Rochester's River Campus.

The Shootout will benefit the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Endowed Scholarship Initiative.

The basketball tournament will match a faculty team against students from the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Medical residents also will play a hospital staff team. The winners will play for the Shootout title.

Tip-off is at 2 p.m. During breaks, there will be games for children.

Tickets are on sale now at the Friends of Strong at Strong Memorial Hospital. The price is $8 for adult and $5 for children. For more information, call 275-2420. Tickets also will be available at the door on the day of the Shootout.

The scholarship initiative is a campaign to increase the School of Medicine scholarship endowment by $10 million. Medical students face a large and growing debt burden. Ninety-seven percent of Rochester’s Medical School’s Class of 2005 borrowed to attend the School. Their average debt at graduation was $134,000. Last year, the School announced a campaign to increase scholarship endowments. A $10-million increase would generate $550,000 each year in new scholarship aid.
