William J. Hall doesn’t just lecture on successful aging, he lives it. Recognized internationally for his work in geriatrics and his expertise based on more than two decades of research and experience developing geriatric initiatives, Hall urges adults of every age to invest in their personal future by taking care of themselves in the present. That investment includes keeping both mind and body active and staying socially connected.
Hall has focused on building geriatric programs and services in Rochester, N.Y., which have grown steadily in influence and national reputation, including the development of the Center for Healthy Aging and a comprehensive plan of medical education in geriatrics involving students, residents, fellows, and community physicians. Hall earned the Jahnigen Memorial Award from the American Geriatrics Society for his outstanding contributions to education in the field of geriatrics.
Hall’s interest in geriatrics was sparked while serving a fellowship in pulmonary diseases at Yale University, where he and colleagues studied the long-term physiologic and functional effects of viral respiratory tract infections in frail older adults. These studies became one of the areas of focus for development of the Rochester Area Pepper Center, funded by the National Institute on Aging.
Hall has served as president of the American College of Physicians and as a member of its board of governors and its board of regents. The upstate chapter awarded Hall its Laureate award in 2001, and in 2002 he received a Mastership in the College.
In 2006, Hall was the first geriatric specialist to be elected to the AARP’s board of directors. He has designed and led courses for AARP New York and served as medical advisor for the Triumph Classic, a mini-triathlon for people age 50 and older.
