John D. Bisognano, M.D. Ph.D., works to tackle high blood pressure on multiple fronts. An expert on the treatment of the most challenging forms of hypertension, Bisognano led a nationwide clinical trial testing a new device for resistant hypertension – high blood pressure that does not respond to medications and lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthier diet and exercising. The device, called the Rheos® System, was the first to be tested in a large-scale clinical trial for the treatment of hypertension. Bisognano is collaborating on additional studies of the device, which could potentially improve care and quality of life for a growing number of patients who require more than drugs alone to manage their blood pressure.
On the other end of the spectrum, Bisognano is studying whether less may be more for people with mild or stage I hypertension. He is testing whether or not different doses of an established blood pressure medication can provide the same benefits as a standard dose in people with mild hypertension, possibly with fewer side effects and at a lower cost. Though it is ingrained that we have to have a constant level of medication, Bisognano says it is possible that if the drug level goes down, the brain may be able to compensate.
In addition to his research, Bisognano is the director of Cardiology Outpatient Services and runs the Hypertension Clinic at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where patients receive intensive drug and non-drug treatment of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors. He is also the president of the New York State Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.
