Fellowship Program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
The fellowship program in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center is currently seeking a fellow to start July of 2013. It is a three-year program approved by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the American Board of Urology. It is open to candidates who completed residency training in an approved program in Obstetrics & Gynecology or in Urology.
Our fellowship program offers a three year experience, two years are devoted to clinical and surgical responsibilities and a third year is reserved for research efforts. The majority of the fellows’ clinical time will be spent at Strong Memorial Hospital, the major tertiary care center in western New York, and in our outpatient clinical office at 500 Red Creek Drive. The division of Urogynecology draws from a large geographic region and cares for a wide range of pelvic floor disorders. Fellows are instructed in the surgical and non-surgical management of pelvic floor disorders. By completion of their fellowships are competent well-trained pelvic surgeons and experts in female pelvic medicine. Our faculty is diverse. It includes members of the departments of Female Urology, Colo-Rectal Surgery, Gynecologic Oncology, Gynecologic Specialties, Physical Therapy and Geriatric Medicine as well as the three fellowship-trained Urogynecologist.
We have a detailed didactic teaching schedule covering all areas of the required fellow education program. The required statistical and clinical research design didactic courses are completed through the Department of Community and Preventative Medicine at the University of Rochester. Fellows have the opportunity to take additional classes according to their interests and time constraints. Interested fellows have the opportunity to obtain a master’s of Public Health through Department of Community and Preventative Medicine.
Clinical research projects are completed in our inpatient and outpatient clinical space and our bench research projects in the laboratory spaces available through the department of Ob/Gyn and Urology. Research projects may be pursued during the course of one complete year or Research time may be divided across the three years to allow for the completion of clinical studies. In addition, all fellows complete and submit a study proposal at the R03 level or equivalent prior to the completion of the program. Fellows are not only trained in research and clinical care, but participate in the teaching of medical students and residents. They present at grand rounds to the department during their final year of training and participate in the didactic responsibilities of the division.
It is our goal to train consultants of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, individuals who serve their community as skilled and knowledgeable physicians, as scientists and as teachers. The fellowship program at the University of Rochester Medical Center adheres to the principals and enabling objectives as outlined by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in ‘A Guide to Learning in Urogynecology/Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery’. Upon completion of the fellowship program, each fellow is qualified for a career in academic medicine.
At the University of Rochester Medical Center, we provide care for female pelvic floor disorders in a cooperative, multi-specialty approach.
