Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring and Antepartum/Postpartum Courses
- 301 and 300 Level Courses -
Initiated in 1991, Peri-FACTS is a multimedia program that focuses on teaching fetal heart rate interpretation skills as well as providing up-to-date information on common obstetric issues. Learning materials are presented to our participants on a monthly basis and consist of educational videos, engaging reading materials, and real-life clinical cases that include fetal heart rate tracings and test questions. Peri-FACTS uses NICHD vocabulary, which encourages nurses and doctors to use the same language for fetal heart rate interpretation. Currently, nearly 12,000 obstetric care providers in approximately 500 institutions across the country and abroad participate in the program.
Peri-FACTS Gynecology Course
- 302 Level Course -
New to the Peri-FACTS Academy, the Gynecology Course presents topics on women's healthcare issues and is available as a value added component of the program to our 300 and 301 Level Course participants.
Program Overview
- The Peri-FACTS online obstetric education program is based on a 12-month curriculum. Each month, obstetric nurse specialists and perinatologists at the University of Rochester Medical Center and a broad range of medical specialists who, in addition to their clinical duties, prepare and distribute the following:
- two articles devoted to a major obstetric topic,
- two educational videos from the Peri-FACTS Channel,
- two clinical case studies with fetal heart rate tracings for interpretation that relate to the obstetric articles (fetal heart rate tracings apply to the 300 Level Course only),
- one article devoted to a gynecologic topic,
- one review test that relates to the gynecologic test, and
- one web-casted grand rounds lecture.
- The program is offered exclusively online and is available anywhere Internet access is available.
- Nurse participants have the opportunity to complete 24 clinical case studies each year. An average of 1.25 nursing contact hours are awarded upon successful completion of each clinical case study in the 301 Level Course, an average of 1 nursing contact hour is awarded upon successful completion of each clinical case study in the 300 Level Course, and an average of 1 nursing contact hour is awarded upon successful completion of the gynecology review test.
- Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and midwives can earn up to 30 AMA PRA Category 1 credits per year for the 301 Level Course. Continuing medical education credits are not offered for the 300 or 302 Level Courses.
- Clinically relevant articles and case studies, prepared by a broad range of experts, are posted on the first day of every month.
- Participants complete their tests and evaluations online. All test questions are in a multiple choice, true/false, multiple-answer, or matching format. Tests are corrected automatically and they receive immediate feedback on their test results.
- The Peri-FACTS Video Channel presents short, educational videos that focus on fetal heart rate monitor interpretation, general obstetric, patient safety, and disease-related topics.
- The University of Rochester's web-casted grand rounds are presented every month on topics pertaining to obstetrics, gynecology, endocrinology, oncology, and urogynecology.
- Yearly group subscription rates, for five or more participants, are only $83.00 per nurse; $108.00 per physician assistant, nurse practitioner or midwife; and $135.00 per physician.
- Yearly individual subscription rates are only $186.00 per nurse; $268.00 per physician assistant, nurse practitioner or midwife; and $330.00 per physician.
- Each individual or group that enrolls receives a start-up package that includes a set of our reference textbooks, a Subscribers' Manual, and an in-service CD (all included in the $135.00 one-time only start-up fee). Additional textbooks can be purchased online via the Peri-FACTS Store.
- Each participating agency chooses their own on-site Peri-FACTS Coordinator. We recommend that you select someone who demonstrates leadership qualities and who has an established positive rapport with the obstetric staff. The individual selected to be the Peri-FACTS Coordinator at each site is extremely important to the success of the program, for this person will act as a resource for the staff and be the liaison between your organization and Peri-FACTS.

Cost-effective
In the past, obtaining continuing obstetric education has meant sending nurses and physicians to costly conferences. Today, Peri-FACTS makes it possible to update, expand, and validate your providers' knowledge base without their leaving the unit...at a fraction of the cost that your organization typically expends to send one or two providers to a professional conference.
- The cost of the Peri-FACTS program is approximately $2.77 per contact hour, and $4.50 per Category 1 credit for a group of five or more nurses and/or physicians.
- Peri-FACTS is performed onsite, eliminating the expense of travel and hotels. Participants do not lose work time on the unit, as it is possible for them to complete the program when time permits, anywhere internet is accessible.
