Constantino Fernandez, M.D.
Dr. Fernandez is a Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Nicaraguan born,
Dr. Fernandez earned his Medical Degree at the University of Puebla, Mexico. He completed his
residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, New York and then
became a Fellow in Family Planning at Hutzel Hospital at Wayne State University in Detroit,
Michigan. In 1976 he was trained in Population Family Planning and Responsible Parenthood,
University of Colorado.
Dr. Fernandez was selected by the Nicaraguan government to participate in a Johns Hopkins Scholar Program for International Education and Training in Reproductive Health. Dr. Fernandez then returned to Managua, Nicaragua where he was Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of Education at the Materno Infantil Fernando Velez Paiz Hospital. As Chairman, Dr. Fernandez developed a Family Planning Program. After a Revolution in Nicaragua, Dr. Fernandez returned to Rochester and became Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Anthony Jordan Health Center (1980), St. Mary's Hospital and was Assistant Chair at Park Ridge Hospital (1996-97). Dr. Fernandez has a special interest in community and minority reproductive health. He is the Chair of the Hispanic Health Task Force and a board member of Perinatal Network of Monroe County. Dr. Fernandez participated as a scholar in the United Way of Rochester Spanish Leadership Program. He was a scholar in 1994 at Harvard Medical School Leadership for Physician Executives. He was a scholar for the Wyeth Ayerst APGO Academic Leadership Program and at the APGO Solvay Educational Scholars Development Program (1990-2000). He is the recipient of the 1988 Award for excellence in teaching in OB/GYN UOR Affiliate Hospitals. He received the 2001 Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education Association of Obstetrician and Gynecologist). Dr. Fernandez's practice is primary OB/GYN care with emphasis and interest in Hispanic women's health. He is the recipient of the 1995 Florence Thiede Award for Perinatal Health Services, which honors longstanding efforts in leadership that impact directly upon the health of the community. Dr. Fernandez is certified and re-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
