William R. Phipps, M.D.
Dr. Phipps received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 1976 and his medical degree from the Johns
Hopkins School of Medicine in 1980. He completed both his obstetrics/gynecology
residency and reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Harvard Medical
School (Brigham and Women's Hospital) before taking a faculty position
at the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota, he made national headlines
when his patient, Arlette Schweitzer, became the first woman in the
country to successfully serve as a gestational carrier surrogate for
her daughter, Christa Uchytil, who was born without a uterus. Dr. Phipps
is currently director of the IVF program at the University of Rochester.
Dr. Phipps is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both obstetrics/gynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
Current areas of interest:
Assisted reproductive technologies; phytoestrogens; dietary effects on menstrual cycle,
estrogen action, and breast cancer risk.
