About the Medical Center
URMC OB/GYN

Strong Memorial Hospital, a 650-bed institution, is the primary teaching facility of the University of Rochester Medical Center. Highland Hospital, a 250-bed acute care facility with a major focus in geriatrics, represents another major University Medical Center facility. These acute care hospitals serve both as community health care facilities and specialized referral centers for the region. Specialized services at Strong include, in part, three intensive medical and surgical care units, a cardiac step-down unit, a regional perinatal unit, a bone marrow transplantation unit, a burn unit, a special rehabilitation unit, an NIH-funded Clinical Research Center, an AIDS Center, an Environmental Health Sciences Center, a Center on Aging, a Trauma Center, and an integrated Cancer Center. The University of Rochester has also been selected by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Center for research on particulate air pollution.

The hospitals populations are quite varied. Approximately 30% of the patients are referred from surrounding communities in the upstate New York area and north-central Pennsylvania. Seventy percent of the patients come from the greater Rochester area and 10% from the inner city. This broad representation of patients provides a well-balanced teaching experience that has attracted an outstanding medical house staff.

Rochester General Hospital is a 500 bed full service general hospital located about six miles from Strong. Like The Genesee Hospital, it also has a full-time university-appointed teaching faculty and is staffed by residents from the Primary Care Program in Internal Medicine.

All of these hospitals are located in safe, pleasant, middle-class neighborhoods. It is possible for house staff and fellows to live within walking distance of Strong Memorial Hospital. University sponsored housing and private housing are readily available. The high housing costs experienced on the East and West coast have not invaded the Rochester housing market.
