URMC OB/GYNMedical Student Education

Obstetrics/Gynecology Bylaws at Highland Hospital

  • The ob/gyn team meets at approximately 6:45 AM every morning in the 2nd floor resident lounge. (Confirm time with GYN Chief.)
  • You will need to arrive early at the hospital each day in order to complete your patient rounds before the gynecology team meets.
  • While on service, the GYN chief will make the OR schedule available to the GYN residents and make suggestions regarding which cases will be educationally beneficial for you to attend. If there are no cases or cases are over for the day then head to the labor deck.
  • After you participate in the delivery or surgery, you will need to round on that patient daily.
  • Ask the OB deck resident which labor patients are appropriate to follow and introduce yourself to them and to the nurse. When the patient enters 2nd stage, push with the patient.
  • Students on the service should distribute themselves so that each student has the opportunity to see a wide variety of cases.
  • Always introduce yourself to the attendings doing the case and to the patient prior to surgery.
  • It is also important to review the patient's chart prior to working in the operating room.
  • After surgery, you should round on the patient daily and record progress notes.
