Advice on how to do well on the OB\GYN clerkship:
- Make sure you read the appropriate material and are prepared for case presentation conferences. These conferences will follow a problem-based learning format, which will place the primary responsibility for researching the material on the student.
- Be a team player. We know this is a demanding rotation - academically, emotionally, and physically - and we will try to be sensitive to your needs. Be considerate and respectful to patients, staff, and peers.
- Be available for clinical work. Volunteer and be highly visible to the residents and attendings. Don’t wait to be pulled into the exam room - ask if you can come along.
- Be assertive, but not pushy. Some patients will request that students not be involved in their care, do not be offended by this, it is the patient’s right to refuse, and it happens rarely.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate. If you are not sure regarding your responsibilities, ask someone. The only way that you will be able to understand what is expected of you, and we in turn can address your questions/needs, is for you to communicate.
- Remember, the impression you make on those around you is just as important as your technical skills and your intellectual ability. Development of excellent communication skills is essential to your success as a physician.
We hope you enjoy your ob/gyn experience! |
