Legacy of Results
From the training of world-renowned physicians and scientists to the discovery and development of significant medical advances, the URMC has a rich legacy of yielding positive research results that improve human health. A few examples:
- URMC scientists developed the Haemophilus influenza b (Hib) vaccine, virtually eradicating a leading cause of meningitis in preschoolers.
- 1941 alumnus Arthur Kornberg, M.D., received the Nobel Prize for groundbreaking work in the synthesis of DNA.
- We were the first to administer lung surfactant to premature infants more than 20 years ago, dramatically improving survival rates for babies born more than 12 weeks premature from 50% to 90%.
