Pathologics LLCPathologics is a seed-stage molecular diagnostics company focused on developing a platform-based, highly adaptable biological detection system. By using the advantages of label-free diagnostics, the company will provide hospitals, clinics, and physicians with the means to perform earlier and more definitive diagnostics for their patients. The product will consist of disposable, single-use diagnostic chips that target specific disease states, pathogens, and other health related molecular markers and a PC-based chip reader that will analyze the diagnostic information from the chip. The company was founded in 2003 based on technology developed in the labs of Benjamin L. Miller Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Lewis Rothberg Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. Pathologics’ first product will result from an awarded Phase I Small Business and Innovation Research development grant from the United States Air Force/Department of Defense. The technology was successful in efficacy trials that monitored soldiers’ blood samples for pro-inflammatory cytokines indicative of exposure to immunotoxic agents. Based on these results, the company has been invited to apply for a Phase II grant. In addition to defense applications, systems that can monitor relative cytokine levels have utility in pharmaceutical toxicity testing and in assessment of disease severity, such as in diabetes and cardiac-related illnesses. Pathologics will eventually seek an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner in the medical device arena to co-develop and manufacture the final reader, and market, sell, and distribute products to end users. The company plans to develop additional assays and platform enhancements and looks forward to a 2009 launch of devices for Department of Defense and civilian use. The company employs eight in Rochester, NY. For more information, visit Pathologics online. |
