VirtualScopics LLC

The economic benefit of getting a drug to market faster can reach hundreds of millions of dollars per compound. VirtualScopics’ technology enables faster and more reliable detection of disease progression or therapeutic benefit, and accelerates the clinical trial process. VirtualScopics utilizes its patented suite of image analysis algorithms to detect, measure, and analyze specific biological structures from CT, MRI, PET, and ultrasound data. The technology generates compelling 3-D color images of structures and tissues.

VirtualScopics was founded in 1999 to advance imaging science. URMC’s Saara Totterman, M.D., Ph.D. and Kevin Parker, Ph.D., José Tamez, Ph.D., and Edward Ashton, Ph.D. of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences directed early efforts primarily toward the accurate and reproducible measurement of advanced image-based biomarkers such as hippocampus volume and cartilage thickness. The company continues to develop image-related biomarkers as well as provide innovative imaging clinical trial services for pharmaceutical development.

VirtualScopics has developed successful collaborative relationships with companies such as Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, Johnson & Johnson, GE Healthcare, and others. The company employs 38 and is located in Rochester, NY.
