Research strengthsOncology/James P. Wilmot Cancer Center
Summary: Academic medical centers form the frontline in national efforts to develop better cancer therapies. A hallmark of the most successful cancer centers is the ability to perform "bench to bedside" translational research. The Wilmot Cancer Center has an established track record of broad, multidisciplinary and collaborative research, with the "bench to bedside" concept as its guiding principle. In basic science, researchers focus on Epigenetics of Cancer; Prostate/GU; Cancer Control and Epidemiology; Interactive Cancer Biology; Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis, and Hematologic Malignancy and Inflammation. The center also has a strong interest in symptom relief during treatment, tobacco-related research, and epidemiology and outcomes studies. Clinical research is strongest in the areas of breast cancer, urological/prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and hematologic malignancies. More than 150 clinical trials are open at any given time. The Cancer Center is also developing niches in the research and treatment of head and neck cancers, bone and brain tumors, and pediatric blood cancers. Leadership: Richard
