At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to:
- Understand the basic knowledge necessary to implement and operate PACS for cardiology and radiology and other clinical specialties
- Understand the importance of open standards, e.g., HL7, DICOM and elimination of proprietary components in the implementation of the Digital Healthcare Information and Management Systems (DHIMS)
- Understand the inter-relationship of the various clinical information (data and images) systems, e.g., HIS, RIS, CPOE, EHR, PACS, etc. in DHIMS
- Demonstrate that each component of the DHIMS must be tailored to the specific clinical specialty that interacts with it and must be intuitively functional to operate
- Explain why a Healthcare Enterprise Archive (HEA) is preferred to isolated islands of stored information for each clinical application
- Provide an understanding of the characteristics that modalities, information systems and workflow have on clinical operations so information technology personnel and administrators can effectively operate in the digital healthcare environment
- Explain the impact of DHIMS on workflow and productivity and why significant changes are required in the workplace and personal behavior to maximize the benefits of the transition to a paperless and film-less operation
- Understand current CR and DR technology
- Understand current security and information retention requirements for DHIMS
