Conferences and Courses

The University of Pittsburgh Division of Pathology Informatics hosts an annual conference, the fall APIII (this year, Advancing Practice, Instruction, and Innovation through Informatics). The University of Michigan Department of Pathology has traditionally hosted a spring Automated Information Management in the Clinical Laboratory conference in Ann Arbor.

The Association for Laboratory Automation offers annual conferences that focus on technological advances, including automation and information technology, in research and development laboratories.

Stanford Center for Professional Development offers online courses in bioinformatics, professional education courses in Computational Molecular Biology and Protein Architecture, and non-credit short courses in Medical Informatics and Computer-Assisted Medical Decision Making.

Laboratory Information Systems

Cerner Corporation began with lab systems but has moved to integrated clinical information systems. Their site has some interesting features, including discussion of Industry Issues such as bioterrorism and patient safety, and a Physician Resource page. Cerner is now a vendor for CoPath Plus and other Dynamic Healthcare Technologies AP software.

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology offers consultations via telepathology and information about cameras, generic systems, and tips for use.

Fletcher Allen Health Care at the University of Vermont offers a full range of telemedicine services, including pathology consultations.

Telepathology Consultants P.C. are a Colorado-based group interested in promoting the use of telepathology. There are cases, articles, information on upcoming courses, information on becoming a consultant, and links to products.

Trestle Corporation markets Internet-based microscopy systems (formerly from Illumea). You can download a viewer and log on to a demo microscope.

American Medical Informatics Association

Cognitive Science Branch of the National Library of Medicine conducts research and development in computer and information technologies. This site provides information on their various projects.

Health Data Management magazine. The free HDM Week e-mail newsletter summarizes and links to recent articles and news flashes.

Health Informatics Worldwide. International list of informatics organizations and departments with informatics programs. Provided by the University of Freiburg.

Healthcare Informatics magazine has industry reports on topics such as wireless technology. Every issue has a calendar of upcoming events.

The Informatics Review, the journal of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS), has articles and many links to other sources (bibliographies, decision support systems, on-line lessons, open source resources, language resources--these are just a few of the headers).

Medical Informatics & the Internet in Medicine, a quarterly journal. Recent issues have included a number of articles of interest to pathologists, for example, on web-based medical and image databases. Browsers can access contents and abstracts and register for a sample copy.
