University of Rochester

The University of Rochester Directory provides online searchable staff and student phone books and a comprehensive listing of departments. Note that Departments can suppress employee entries, so if someone does not appear, it does not necessarily mean that they do not work here.

The URMC Biomedical Researcher's Resources page lists internal departments and outside agencies in the areas of grants, contracts, and intellectual property, and also suggests some vendors for lab supplies and equipment.

ORPA, the Office of Research and Project Administration, is a very complete and informative site with University and NIH policies, downloadable University forms and sponsor forms, and many other resources.

EH&S, Environmental Health and Safety, posts important policies and procedures, information for using and finding MSDS forms, and a comprehensive list of links to related sites. Some of these, like the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registration, are mines of information. The Hazardous Waste Management unit offers a list of free chemicals for reissue at the U of R.

The Department of Biostatistics provides a consulting service for data management. For general academic computing needs, start with the Miner Library, below. The division of Medical Informatics is a resource for special projects, including Telemedicine.

The Center for Future Health is exploring the development of Smart Health Tools for home use. Interested UR researchers should contact them to arrange a visit to the Smart Medical Home prototype at the Medical Center.

Local Libraries

The Medical Center's invaluable Miner Library offers guides and classes that help to maximize the value of the Internet to the URMC community. Their Learning Center is the place to sign up for Digital Library passwords.

Health Departments

The Monroe County Department of Public Health has a site that focuses on health information, disease prevention and environmental concerns.

The New York State Department of Health offers consumer as well as provider information. Its Wadsworth Center is a public health laboratory that is responsible for regulating clinical and environmental laboratories and tissue banks throughout New York State. See Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program for laboratory standards and further information. The NYSDOH list of Health-Related Web Sites has links to other states and to global agencies.

Rochester and Regional Information

For entertainment information try MyRochester.com. There's a searchable events calendar. It doesn't link directly to the organizations sponsoring the events, but there's also a front page searchable list of Rochester web sites so they're easy to find.

The City of Rochester has good information about the city, the city government, services it provides, and fun things to do. There's e-mail addresses for the mayor and major department managers so you can vent to them. Also a list of other useful Rochester web sites.

Rochester City Living is a great site coordinated by the Landmark Society, local realty organizations, and the city, in order to help people find and purchase city homes.

Rochester Environment is kept up-to-date and makes interesting reading.

The Rochester Business Journal is a good source for a local slant on the economy and a good starting point for business and economic news in general.

A couple of sites contain lists of links to other local sites. Neither is as comprehensive as Genesee Gateway used to be, but they are useful. Try @Rochester and InfoRochester.com
