Background:
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer [CoC] mandates that pathology reports at CoC-approved programs included all scientifically validated or regularly used data elements for each site and specimen. In response, the Collage of American Pathologist (CAP) has produced cancer protocols with checklists, to be used as a resource by pathologists. In order to be inclusive, these CAP checklists are often very long, and require extensive, cumbersome editing, making room for clerical errors. There are many other sources of tumor synopsis templates, each of which with its own strength and weakness, tailors to a particular practice setting where it is created and used. CoC imposes no restriction as to the style or source of the templates to be used. Although the CAP protocol checklists would be good candidates for this project. Its copyright prohibits the use by us or unlicensed "secondary disseminator". In addition, overwhelming feedbacks from our users indicate that concise tumor-reporting templates with scientifically validated data elements and clinically important information are highly desirable and more manageable than exhausting long checklist. We therefore create this set of templates based on those from multiple sources.

In an attempt circumvent the drawbacks of paper or static tumor reporting templates; we have converted them from a static text format into dynamic ASP.Net files. The checklists now are presented as drop-down list accessible on the WorldWideWeb. This greatly simplifies the reporting process and minimizes error-prone factors associated with extensive text editing. This on-line reporting system only provides transient (temporary) report at the client site. Closing the browser will permanently erase the final report. No data is retained or collected.
