Dr. di Sant'Agnese's clinical and research expertise is in the development of prostate cancer. His clinical interests include general surgical pathology with special expertise in genitourinary pathology; the application of immunohistochemistry to diagnostic surgical pathology; and the standardization of the reporting of surgical specimens.

Research Overview

Research has included the investigation of the prostatic neuroendocrine cell and neuroendocrine differentiation in prostatic carcinoma. Past studies include seminal descriptive morphologic investigations as well as clinical-pathological correlative studies using such techniques as immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, electron microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy. Our group was the first to describe several peptide hormone products of prostatic neuroendocrine cells as well as the ultrastructural morphology of neuroendocrine cell types. Other research has included tissue, tumor and serum quantitative and correlative studies of neuroendocrine products in both humans and animals. More recently, we have begun to investigate, both in vitro and in vivo, the regulatory mechanisms involved in, and phenotypic effects of, prostatic neuroendocrine differentiation using prostatic cancer cell lines and transgenic/knockout mouse models. For further details see our Neuroendocrine Prostate web site.
