Ongoing Efforts
To date, we have implemented both actions and projects designed to work in cooperation with other University of Rochester departments and community organizations to support minority health care professionals. We now encourage and welcome your suggestions and participation. For example, we could:
- Establish networking events with community health care professionals, organizations, and industries outside of healthcare, with the goal of fostering personal and professional relationships among underrepresented minority professionals in Rochester.
- Educate on a variety of topics relating to cultural diversity.
- Host educational sessions including, but not limited to, discussions for understanding health care disparities; better serving underrepresented children; and understanding the cultural resources available in Rochester.
- Explore a formal integrated cultural competence curriculum across all levels of training and expertise at the University.
- Expand the Pediatric Residency Program’s visibility outside of western New York, establishing liaisons with traditional minority institutions. (Current relationships exist with Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Visiting clerkship are currently being arranged for medical students from each school to have the opportunity to take electives at our partner schools.)
- Implement a Mentorship Program to provide continual support and guidance on professional development.
