Community Support and Education
The Community Education, Technical Assistance and Dissemination of Information (CETAD) program of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) coordinates and co-sponsors regional and national conferences. Faculty and staff provide continuing education throughout the state, and participate in national training activities as well. Education about persons with developmental disabilities, diagnosis and treatment, is available for both professionals and families in the community. The goals are to facilitate culturally-competent, family-centered, community-based care, and to promote best practices in an inclusive environment.
Faculty from the SCDD provide technical assistance to a variety of local, state and national organizations to better understand and provide for the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Dissemination activities include the production of technical manuals, training curricula, training materials on CD rom, electronic and paper versions of newsletters, and interactive video conferencing.
Topics of recent community education efforts are:
- Best practices for children with autism and pervasive developmental disorders
- Inclusion of children with special health care needs and developmental disabilities in regular educational programs
- Transition issues for teenagers and young adults with developmental disabilities
- Care for medically fragile children
- Early intervention issues including clinical practice guidelines on autism and communication disorders, cultural and linguistic diversity and guidelines for health care practitioners
- Cultural competence in human service programs
- Life span issues in developmental disabilities
