Institute for Innovative Transition

Technical Assistance

Group of teensThe Institute works to improve transition planning from school to post school activities for students with developmental disabilities ages 14-25. Technical assistance is provided to educational institutions to improve community collaboration of resources and assistance with transition planning. The goal is to increase the awareness of post school options to young adults with developmental disabilities and improve school retention until graduation.

Transition Leadership Council
The Institute has convened a council of youth and young adults with disabilities in order to advise the Institute for Innovative Transition on current initiatives and future endeavors. The council provides vital information to the Institute while developing leadership and advocacy skills in order to become effective leaders in their community. Members learn about the Institute’s goals and progress; discuss concerns and reflect on lived experiences about transition. Please check out the Transition Leadership Council.

Regional Pilot Project
The Institute is currently working with Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Services Office and Rochester City School District to increase the awareness of services provided by the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. Families, staff, and students will be able to meet with a representative to discuss eligibility, services and the application process.

Campus Connections
The Institute provides facilitation and technical assistance to a group of matriculated college students attending Monroe Community College. The group, Campus Connections is a group of Monroe Community College matriculated college students of varying disabilities that meet bi-weekly at Campus Center, located on the Brighton Campus. The group discusses professorial attitudes towards disabilities, navigating resources on campus and connecting with other students with disabilities for advice on being a college student with a disability.
