Education Research

Caren Gellin, M.D., with mentorship from Elise van der Jagt, M.D., M.P.H., created a simulation-based curriculum for residents, nurses, students, and staff around resuscitation and other urgent patient events that depend on interprofessional interactions. Dr. Gellin developed the curriculum based on best practices in simulation education, implemented it on the general inpatient units at Golisano Children’s Hospital, evaluated its effectiveness over the past 4 years, and presented the data at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, a forum for sharing simulation education research.

As a Dean’s Teaching Fellow, she also brought together an interprofessional and multidisciplinary team, including experts in education, to develop and implement the brand new URMC Simulation Instructor Course, which piloted in April 2012. With evaluations to refine and assess the effectiveness of the course in progress, plans are underway to offer it to a regional audience after the third course in December. Thus, research in education allows accrual of an evidence base upon which the very best educational programs can be built.
